Welcome to Ribe Vesterå:
We hope that this website may help any angler, who wants to fish Ribe Vesterå (the western part of Ribe River). Ribe Sportsfiskerforening (Ribe Angler's Association) controls most of the fishing rights on the Ribe River, from the sea to the eastern parts of the river system. However, foreigners are only allowed to fish some parts of the river at the moment, i.e. the Ribe Vesterå and the eastern parts of Gels Å. (Gels Å offers some very good fishing for Grayling). The Ribe Vesterå is about 6 kilometers long and offers some of the best seatrout and salmon fishing in Denmark. In fact some of the biggest seatrouts of the world run the Ribe River. The biggest seatrout ever caught on fly in Denmark was caught here in 1986: 13,87 kilos. The biggest seatrout that was ever caught in the Ribe River (in a net) was 15,4 kilos. Such big fish are of course extraordinary, but almost every year seatrout and salmon of more than 10 kilos are caught. During the last few years increasing numbers of salmon were caught.
How to fish:
In this wide and slow part of the river, locals mostly use worms, wobblers, spinners and spoons. Spinners of 10-15 grams and worms are probably the most popular baits. Flyfishing is not so common, but this is without doubt only a matter of tradition. It is important to know that the speed of the current in the river is dependant of the tide in the sea. The current usually completely stops when the tide is in, and floodgates at the sea are closed. Most locals find that the fishing is at its best, when the current is strong. In the summer, when water levels in the river are usually low, the current usually stops from 3 hours after low tide to 4 hours after high tide. In spring and autumn, when water levels are usually higher, you are not so dependent on the tide. Best months for seatrout and salmon are probably September and October, but throughout the season there will always be fresh run fish in the river.
Permits:
To fish in the Ribe Vesterå you must buy a permit from Ribe Angler's Association. One day costs DKK 95,- and 3 days costs DKK 210,-. Permits are available at Ribe  Tourist Information, Ribe Camping, Ribe Storkesø and at the local tackle shop "Knæk & Bræk". Especially "Knæk & Bræk" can provide you with useful information about the fishing. Remember that you also need a national angler permit at the postoffice. (Only for persons between 18-67 years). One day DKK 25,-, one week DKK 75,- or one year DKK 100,-.
